WHO ARE WE
Patrick & Kim Smith childhood friends , married since 2011. Formed BRET (Building Relationships in East Texas) a 501(c)3 in 2019 to help former inmates get on the path to success.
Mission: To rehabilitate and educate ex-offenders in an attempt to provide them with the necessary tools needed to succeed.
Motto: Changing the recidivism rate, one ex-offender at a time.

During this event we will hear about the hurdles ex-offenders face once released from prison and what we can do to help them overcome them. We will also learn about right that they have and how they can exercise those rights in their communities.

Speakers 1: Patrick Rodriguez is a man focused on opening doors to education in Georgia for those eager to attend college and he is working on prison education reform. He’s on the rode to complete his bachelor’s degree this spring and he is preparing HIMSELF for the LSAT currently. Patrick is the Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement at Common Good Atlanta. He also serves as Co-Executive Director of The Georgia Coalition of Higher Education in Prison. While he is fighting for changes in policy and logistics, for Patrick, this work represents something even larger.
Speaker 2: Dr. Nancy Nichols State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) Senate District 1 (SD1) Committeewoman
She represents you in Texas Democratic Party (TDP) decision-making meetings. She helps County Chairs & participates in local Democratic meetings & events. Dr. Nichols regularly organizes events that bring statewide candidates to Smith County. She block walks for local candidates too. Each Thursday, Dr. Nichols joins Mayor Pro Tem Shirley McKellar on KGLD's "A View from the Top" radio show to spotlight current issues that impact our lives.
